TOFFEE SQUARE COOKIES
An heirloom recipe from Dorothy Eleanor Miller (1934-2007)

1 cup margarine
1 cup brown sugar, packed
1 egg yolk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups all purpose flour, unsifted
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 large candy bar of your choice (semi-sweet or milk chocolate)
1/2 cup nuts (peanuts, cashews or mixed)

Mix butter and sugar.
Add egg yolk and vanilla.
Stir in flour and salt until blended.
Pack into greased 10x13 inch square pan.
Leave one inch empty on each side of pan.
Cook at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 20-25 minutes.
Remove from oven.
Break candy bar into pieces and add to top.
Return to oven until candy pieces melt, about one minute.
Add nuts to top.
Cool until near room temperature.
Cut into 1-1/2 to 2 inch squares.
